Famine and Malnutrition Ravage Displaced People in the Darfur Region

North Darfur - Mashaweer

The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in the Darfur region has revealed humanitarian conditions it described as “tragic” within displacement camps.

The group warned of the worsening risk of famine and deteriorating living conditions as the shortage of food aid continues.

Adam Regal, the spokesperson for the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur, stated that “displacement camps in Darfur, Kordofan, and the Blue Nile are experiencing a desperate and urgent need for humanitarian aid, given that large numbers of displaced people rely on relief to secure their daily needs.”

He added that “the World Food Programme has reduced food rations by 50 percent, which has doubled the suffering of the displaced who rely primarily on that aid.” He noted that current conditions are worse than before and have contributed to the widespread outbreak of famine.

He explained that “rates of malnutrition among children, along with diseases linked to food shortages, are witnessing a significant increase.” He warned of the possibility of a humanitarian disaster during the month of Ramadan, as the food and living requirements for families increase.
