Health: Sudan is among the countries with high malnutrition rates

Khartoum - Mashaweer

Sudanese Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim stated that Sudan is considered one of the countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region with high rates of malnutrition. He noted that the general rate averages around 15 percent, but rises in some states to reach 30 percent, particularly in localities that were closed off and did not receive regular aid, especially in areas of Darfur and parts of Kordofan.

In his remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat, he highlighted the significant efforts being made by the Ministry of Health in cooperation with UNICEF, UN agencies, and nutrition programs. More than 400 supplementary and therapeutic nutrition centers have been opened in Darfur to provide services to those in need.

Regarding vaccination rates, he explained that they dropped to less than 40 percent during 2023–2024 as a result of the war in its early stages. However, the percentage rose to exceed 70 percent by the end of 2025, which he considered a major achievement that contributed to reducing the infection rates of measles and diphtheria.

He confirmed the implementation of vaccination campaigns to cover unvaccinated children, along with polio control campaigns, in addition to routine programs targeting more than 9 million children across various Sudanese states.
