The United Nations warns of war crimes in South Sudan and calls for a ceasefire
Juba - Mashaweer
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, expressed his shock at the increasing reports of gross violations during the ongoing conflict in South Sudan, which included gruesome killings of civilians, the destruction and poisoning of key water sources, and new waves of mass displacement.
Turk said in a statement today, Tuesday: “Civilians are being killed, injured, and brutally displaced every day across South Sudan as hostilities escalate between the army and opposition forces, and some of these acts may amount to war crimes.”
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights renewed his call for the parties to the conflict to urgently return to dialogue.
He said: “Both parties must take immediate and effective steps, with the support of the international community, to save the nascent peace agreement. South Sudan must be pulled back from the brink of full-scale civil war.”
