UN warns of escalating drone attacks in Sudan

New York - Mashaweer

The United Nations has warned of a dangerous escalation in the use of drones in Sudan, confirming that more than 500 civilians have been killed in airstrikes from early January until March 15, with most casualties occurring in the Kordofan region states.

The UN Human Rights Office reported that more than 277 civilians were killed during the first two weeks of March alone, the majority resulting from drone strikes, indicating an increasing reliance on these weapons in populated areas.

In what was described as the deadliest attack, the Ed Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur state was targeted on the first day of Eid al-Fitr, resulting in the deaths of at least 64 people, including women and children, and causing the hospital to cease operations entirely.

The city of Ad-Dabbah in Northern State witnessed similar strikes that hit civilian facilities, causing deaths and power outages.

A spokesperson for the office warned of the widening scope of cross-border attacks, which threatens serious regional consequences.

She noted that the targeting of civilians and infrastructure may amount to war crimes, calling for a halt to the flow of weapons and renewed efforts to reach an immediate ceasefire.
