Authorities Demolish Citizens’ Homes in Khartoum, Leaving Dozens of Families Homeless

Khartoum – Mashawir

Authorities in Khartoum State continue a large-scale campaign to remove informal housing, most of which is located on the outskirts of the capital. The campaign is being justified on the grounds that these areas pose security concerns, as they are believed to shelter criminals and individuals considered a threat to public safety.

The demolitions included the Um Al-Qura area, north of Block (3), in northern Khartoum Bahri, last Thursday.

Authorities suddenly demolished 83 homes, while demolition notices were issued for an additional 191 houses. This has sparked fear, anxiety, and tension among residents, further worsening the already harsh conditions caused by the ongoing war in the country.

Lawyers representing the affected residents argue that the demolition decisions are illegal, stating that the residents possess contracts and occupancy certificates issued by the Kador locality, which confirm official administrative recognition of their tenure.
