Journalists’ Union Condemns Arrest and Abuse of Female Reporter in Khartoum
Jabal Awliya – Mashawir
The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate has condemned the violations and abusive practices carried out against journalist Miyah Al-Nil Mubarak by members of the General Intelligence Service affiliated with the de facto government in Jabal Awliya locality, Khartoum State, on March 28, while she was performing her journalistic duties.
In a statement issued today (Wednesday), the syndicate said the journalist was arrested while covering middle school exams at a local school. She was taken to an interrogation room, where she was subjected to a body search, and her mobile phone and personal belongings were inspected.
The statement added that she was detained for 12 consecutive hours, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and faced accusations of photographing the site to provide coordinates for targeting the school.
The syndicate noted that she was also accused of forging her press credentials, and a police report was filed against her under charges of impersonating a journalist, despite holding a valid press card issued by the professional registry.
It further highlighted that, in a serious violation of her personal and professional rights, the interrogation included questions about her private life, such as her tribe and the reasons for her divorce.
The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate described the incident as a blatant abuse of power, a grave violation of constitutional and legal rights, and an infringement on her privacy, along with dangerous accusations that could threaten her life.
The syndicate called for an urgent and transparent investigation into the incident, accountability for those involved in violating the journalist’s rights, and stressed the importance of security and law enforcement authorities respecting press credentials as officially recognized professional documents.
