Stéphane Dujarric: UN Teams Working to Expand Humanitarian Operations in Sudan

Washington – Mashawir

The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, said that “UN teams are working to strengthen their presence in Khartoum in order to expand humanitarian operations.”

He explained that the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Denise Brown, has returned to the capital with a core team from the humanitarian unit, while most staff from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs remain in Port Sudan for now.

Other UN agencies have also reopened their offices in Khartoum in recent months after being closed since the beginning of the conflict.

Dujarric noted that the return of the Humanitarian Coordinator and her team signals a renewed commitment to expanding humanitarian operations in the capital and surrounding areas, at a time when needs are rising sharply. This comes as more than 1.6 million Sudanese have returned to Khartoum despite the risks posed by explosive remnants of war and damaged infrastructure.
