Syrian-French photojournalist Abdulmonem Issa, based in Damascus, has been selected as the regional winner for Africa in the “Stories” category of the World Press Photo Contest 2026. The competition honors the best works in photojournalism and documentary photography produced over the past year and connects the world with important stories through outstanding visual storytelling from photographers worldwide.
Issa’s winning entry in the Africa “Stories” category consists of four photographs taken in Sudan during his coverage of a series of articles for the Le Monde titled: “The War in Sudan: A Nation Under Siege.”
The competition’s regional model, introduced in 2021, aims to promote greater diversity in both stories and storytellers from around the world.
This year, 31 out of 42 winners were selected from the same regions they documented. Compared to the 2025 competition, participation from South America increased by 11%, while entries from Asia-Pacific and Oceania rose by 14%. Additionally, women and non-binary photographers accounted for 22% of total submissions.
