Sudanese Teachers Committee Reaffirms Its Demand for Full Payment of Salary Arrears and a Dignified Work Environment

Port Sudan – Mashawir

The Sudanese Teachers Committee has renewed its firm stance on the necessity of paying all delayed salaries in full and ensuring a work environment that preserves the dignity of teachers.
The committee strongly criticized the speech of Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris, describing his promises as a rehash of repetitive language that deceives no one and will not resolve the severe crisis facing Sudanese teachers.
In its statement, the committee criticized the Prime Minister’s directive to pay a one-month incentive and one month of salary arrears, considering it merely temporary relief offered at a politically calculated time that does not address the root causes of the crisis, which continues to worsen daily.
The committee also denounced the repeated linking of such promises to the timing of Sudanese certificate exams, describing it as a clear pressure tactic aimed at exploiting teachers under financial hardship.
It expressed surprise at claims of full preparedness in the education sector, given the reality of a collapsed system, with schools destroyed or closed and teachers unable to access their workplaces.
The committee reaffirmed its demands, including raising the minimum wage to 216,000 Sudanese pounds, paying all salary arrears in full and on a regular basis, and providing a safe working environment that safeguards the dignity of both teachers and students.
It also questioned the Prime Minister’s position regarding the Director of Education in Al Jazira State, who threatened to replace teachers with militias if they continued to demand their rights.
The committee stressed that the dignity of teachers is not subject to negotiation or granted as a favor, and that teachers will not be used as tools in what it described as a cycle of empty promises.
