World Food Programme: 19 million Sudanese face acute hunger
Port Sudan – Mashawir
The World Food Programme (WFP) said that three years of conflict have worsened the humanitarian situation in Sudan.
It added that more than 19 million people are facing acute hunger in the country.
The organization noted that, “where access is possible, aid is helping to reduce hunger, but survival remains at risk due to the lack of urgent funding.”
WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau said in a statement—following his meeting with the program’s new Country Director, Abdullah Al-Wardat, and Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris in Khartoum—that “the situation in the capital has changed noticeably since his last visit six months ago.”
He added: “There is more activity in the city, the airport is functioning, and people are gradually returning to their homes and beginning to rebuild their lives.”
