500 Cases of Dengue Fever Reported in Darfur Amid Lack of Healthcare

Darfur – Mashawir

The General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees in the Darfur Region has expressed deep concern over reports of a dengue fever outbreak in the Tawila area of North Darfur.

In a statement, the Coordination said that its field sources working with the health sector had reported more than 500 cases of infection, amid fears that the disease could spread further given the difficult humanitarian and health conditions faced by displaced people.

“The emergence of these cases calls for urgent health intervention, particularly in light of the limited availability of medical services and treatment resources. These conditions could pose additional risks to the lives of displaced people, especially children, women, older persons, and other groups most vulnerable to health complications,” the statement added.

The statement stressed the urgent need for health interventions to strengthen disease surveillance, provide medicines and medical supplies, ensure access to clean water, control mosquitoes, and intensify health awareness campaigns among affected communities.

The Coordination appealed to health authorities, humanitarian organisations, and relevant international agencies to act immediately to assess the situation on the ground, verify the number of infections, and provide the necessary medical and preventive response. It also called for support to health facilities and frontline health workers.
