More Than 500 People Die from Hunger in Darfur

Darfur – Mashawir

A local official at a displacement camp in Sudan’s western Darfur region said that more than 500 people had died from hunger and malnutrition in recent months.

He appealed to humanitarian organisations to intervene urgently to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of displaced people across the region, where humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate amid the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Mohamed Yacoub, a local official at the Tawila displacement camp in North Darfur State, confirmed that many displaced families were unable to obtain even the minimum amount of food needed to survive. He said these conditions had claimed the lives of more than 500 people in the camp.

Earlier this week, the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees Camps in Darfur announced that hundreds of displaced people had arrived at the Tawila camp. The camp received 1,726 families, comprising 8,390 people, amid severe shortages of food, water and shelter supplies.

Yacoub also said that nearly 16,000 displaced people had arrived in recent days at camps in the areas of Shingil Tobay, Kutum and Kuma in Darfur. The new arrivals are facing declining supplies of food and drinking water, as well as reduced access to healthcare services, due to a lack of international funding.
