United Nations: No Signs of a Breakthrough in Sudan

New York – Mashawir

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo has warned that the situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate.

She stressed that the parties to the conflict have so far shown “no credible commitment” to reaching a political settlement or negotiating a cessation of hostilities, as the humanitarian and security situation in the country continues to worsen.

In a briefing to the UN Security Council on Sudan, DiCarlo said that the Sudanese people continue to face the brutal reality of the conflict, with ongoing fighting, a deepening humanitarian crisis, severe economic hardship and the collapse of essential services.

She added that fighting had continued in recent weeks, particularly in North Kordofan, South Kordofan and Blue Nile states. She noted that the impact of the conflict was being felt across the country, where “drones and airstrikes continue to pose a threat to civilians.”

The UN official also highlighted incidents that had resulted in civilian deaths in various parts of Sudan, including a displacement camp in Blue Nile State, a gold mine in Red Sea State, and several civilian sites in North Kordofan.
