UN Warns of Worsening Humanitarian Catastrophe in Sudan
Khartoum – Mashawir
The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Denise Brown, has warned that the country’s “humanitarian catastrophe” is worsening due to severe rainfall shortages in some areas.
In a statement, Brown said that the lack of rainfall “will inevitably be followed by the spread of malnutrition and disease,” increasing the risks faced by millions of children already affected by repeated displacement.
She added that the urgent provision of food assistance and ensuring access to clean water and healthcare services were priorities for people facing the consequences of reduced rainfall, compounded by more than three years of war, particularly in the Darfur region and parts of Kordofan.
Brown warned that the humanitarian community lacked the resources needed to respond to growing needs, adding that “without urgent funding, food stocks are expected to run out by early 2027.”
