War Expands the Cycle of Poverty and Begging in Sudan

Khartoum – Mashawir

In a report released last April, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) warned that the continuation of the conflict could push the extreme poverty rate to 60 per cent of the population by 2030, equivalent to approximately 36 million people.

Meanwhile, Sudan’s Minister of Human Resources, Mutasim Ahmed Saleh, announced that the poverty rate had reached approximately 73 per cent among Sudanese people both inside and outside the country.

He described the figure as “shocking,” reflecting the scale of the deterioration caused by the ongoing conflict.

Social researcher Randa Hussein stressed the need for society to address begging with compassion and a strong sense of responsibility, without humiliation, discrimination, or assuming that all people who beg belong to the same category.

She explained that “some of these people have lost their jobs, homes and social safety nets, leaving them unable to meet even the most basic necessities of life.”
