UN: Women in El Fasher Continue to Suffer the Consequences of Sexual Violence
New York – Mashawir
The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) has affirmed that women and girls in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, continue to suffer the consequences of sexual violence, psychological trauma, and the loss of family members and homes, one year after the city fell to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) following a months-long siege.
Anna Mutavati, UN Women’s Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, stated that 90 percent of the 50 women’s organizations surveyed by the agency provide support to people displaced from El Fasher.
She reported that women and girls continue to live in unsafe conditions and suffer from psychological trauma and ongoing distress.
She noted that the violations witnessed in El Fasher included gang rape, beatings, humiliation, and looting of property, as well as the abduction of women and girls, some of whom remain missing.
Mutavati explained that insomnia, psychological suffering, and insecurity have become features of women’s daily lives as they struggle to access food, water, and healthcare.
She further noted that providers of essential services, including healthcare and psychological support, are themselves facing threats and harassment while carrying out their work.
