Transport and Bread Crises Deepen the Suffering of Khartoum Residents

Khartoum – Mashawir

Living conditions in Sudan have deteriorated sharply amid fuel shortages in the capital, Khartoum, and several other states. The price of a loaf of bread is expected to rise to 1,000 Sudanese pounds following fresh increases in flour prices and the cost of bread production inputs.

Sudanese markets are witnessing continued increases in consumer goods prices, driven by the ongoing depreciation of the Sudanese pound, rising costs of transporting goods between states, and fuel shortages that have disrupted transport services.

Several bakery owners confirmed that flour companies had introduced new price increases effective Sunday, citing higher bread production costs.

Essam Okasha, Deputy Chairman of the Bakers’ Union, revealed that flour prices had risen to 191,500 Sudanese pounds. He noted that the increases affected all flour companies and had also driven up the prices of other bread production inputs.

Meanwhile, Khartoum experienced a severe public transport crisis on Sunday due to fuel shortages, with vehicles lining up outside fuel stations. The situation forced residents to wait for hours to find transport to their various destinations.
