Médecins Sans Frontières Warns of Disease Outbreaks in Darfur

Darfur – Mashawir

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has warned of outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases in Darfur amid a shortage of vaccinations, disruptions to cold-chain systems, and widening immunity gaps.

The Ministry of Health has continued to organise measles vaccination campaigns across Darfur in cooperation with United Nations agencies and humanitarian organisations, despite most of the region falling outside government control.

In a report, Médecins Sans Frontières said that outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases were escalating in Darfur, as immunisation gaps continued to widen and routine vaccination services were disrupted by the war, displacement, and shortages of medical supplies.

The organisation explained that its teams had treated thousands of cases of measles and whooping cough between January 2024 and April 2026 across the states of South, Central, North, and West Darfur. Outbreaks repeatedly occurred in the same areas, primarily affecting children who had not received vaccinations.
