Federal Gathering: Ahmed Haroun’s Appearance Reveals Former Regime’s Moves to Regain Power
Nairobi – Mashawir
The Federal Gathering said that the public appearance of Ahmed Haroun, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), on the Sudan Podcast reveals the space available to former regime leaders and their affiliated figures to reorganise their ranks and seek to regain power, amid the failure of the Port Sudan authorities to take action to arrest him.
In a press statement issued on Friday, the party explained that Haroun is wanted by the International Criminal Court under an arrest warrant issued in 2007, over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.
It noted that he was among those detained at Kober Prison following the fall of the Salvation Regime.
The Federal Gathering considered that his public appearance without any measures being taken to arrest and return him to prison amounted to a disregard for international justice and a challenge to the aspirations of the December Revolution and the decision to dissolve the National Congress Party.
The party called on the Port Sudan authorities to immediately arrest Haroun and urged the international community to exert pressure to ensure the enforcement of arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court.
It also appealed to media platforms not to provide a platform that normalises the public presence of individuals wanted by international justice or former regime leaders.
