Emergency Lawyers Call for the Arrest of Ahmed Haroun and Disclosure of the Whereabouts of ICC-Wanted Individuals

Khartoum – Mashawir

Calls for the arrest of Ahmed Mohamed Haroun, head of the dissolved National Congress Party, have intensified following his recent media appearance on the “Sudan Podcast.”

The Emergency Lawyers group has called on the Sudanese authorities to disclose his legal status and clarify the whereabouts of ousted President Omar al-Bashir and former Defence Minister Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein.

In a statement, the group expressed concern over Haroun’s appearance, noting that he is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) under an arrest warrant issued in 2007.

It pointed out that Haroun had been held at Kober Prison before the outbreak of the war in April 2023, alongside al-Bashir and Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein, all of whom are wanted by the ICC over allegations of crimes committed in Darfur.

The group called on the authorities, particularly the leadership of the Sudanese Armed Forces, to disclose the whereabouts of the three individuals, explain the circumstances surrounding their release from detention, clarify the status of the domestic criminal proceedings instituted against them, and take the necessary measures to arrest and surrender them to the International Criminal Court.

The Emergency Lawyers group stressed that the continuation of the war does not constitute a justification for suspending justice or allowing perpetrators to escape accountability.
