The Hamashkoreib Youth Emergency Response Room in Kassala State has warned of an imminent famine in the area following the complete disappearance of sorghum, a staple food relied upon by local residents, from local markets.
In a statement, the emergency response room said that “the situation is no longer a matter of rising prices or difficulties in accessing food; sorghum is now entirely unavailable.”
The group called on the state’s Security Committee to take immediate and decisive action, urgently supply sorghum, and conduct a rapid assessment of the food needs of residents in the town and surrounding villages within the locality. It also urged the authorities to introduce measures to prevent further disruptions to food supplies.
Hamashkoreib Locality, located in Kassala State in eastern Sudan along the border with Eritrea, is one of the region’s prominent border centres of strategic security importance. It is also considered a major spiritual centre for Quranic education in eastern Sudan.
