Dinder River Floods 35 Agricultural Projects, Hundreds of Livestock Drown

Mashawir – Reports

Flooding of the Dinder River—one of the tributaries of the Blue Nile—has submerged 35 agricultural projects and led to the drowning of hundreds of livestock.

Residents in several Sudanese states fear a repeat of devastating floods and torrential rains, especially as the country remains consumed by war. Concerns are rising over the potential spread of infectious, rain-related diseases due to the heavy presence of disease vectors such as flies and mosquitoes, as well as the emergence of some poisonous insects.

Sudan’s rainy season typically lasts from June to October, and the country is often hit annually by severe floods and torrential rains that destroy thousands of homes, claim lives, and leave many injured. These disasters also damage agricultural projects, wash away key roads, and lead to serious health and environmental consequences.

The rising water levels of the seasonal Gash River in the state have also isolated and trapped hundreds of families in the Tandlai area, north of the city.

The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources has issued warnings to citizens and local authorities about sudden flash floods expected in nine states: Northern, River Nile, Al-Jazira, North Kordofan, North Darfur, West Darfur, White Nile, Sennar, and Kassala.
