Guterres Calls for Ceasefire and Peaceful Settlement to End War in Suda

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a ceasefire in Sudan and a peaceful settlement to end the war.

According to a UN statement, Guterres met with Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris and expressed his deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The Secretary-General stressed the urgent need for a permanent ceasefire and the launch of an inclusive political process leading to a peaceful resolution of the crisis facing the country.

The statement said both sides emphasized the importance of facilitating humanitarian access to affected areas. The meeting also discussed ways to strengthen Sudan’s cooperation with the UN, particularly in civilian protection, expanding humanitarian assistance, and supporting efforts to rebuild war-damaged areas.

The two leaders, meeting on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, also discussed the worsening humanitarian situation in Darfur—especially in El-Fasher—as well as in Kordofan.
