Volunteers Warn of Closure of Charity Kitchens in Darfur

 Follow-ups – Mashawir

Volunteers in Darfur, western Sudan, have issued an urgent appeal to address the “severe hunger” affecting displacement camps in the region.

Field volunteers warned that lack of funding and difficulties in supply routes could lead to the closure of most charity kitchens in the camps due to the depletion of food supplies.

Yahya Abu Asal, Programs and Projects Coordinator at the Al-Daghin Humanitarian Emergency Room, told Al Jazeera Mubasher that around 45,000 people in shelters and displacement camps in East Darfur—including Sabreen, Qurayda, Al-Manara, and Laqawa camps—are in urgent need of food, nutrition, and water.

He explained that these communities are facing a critical shortage after charity kitchens stopped operating for a long time due to funding shortages.

Abu Asal called on organizations and charitable bodies to support the shelters and displacement camps with food supplies and kitchens, and to assist emergency rooms and field organizations with medical supplies and essential shelter materials.

Volunteer Aya Adam Juma told Al Jazeera Mubasher that there is also a severe shortage of medicines and even the most basic medical supplies.
