Rising Death Rates Due to Hunger in Darfur Displacement Camps

Follow-ups - Mashaweer

The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in the Darfur region announced Friday, a rise in deaths resulting from hunger, malnutrition, and the widespread outbreak of diseases linked to the lack of food and clean water within displacement camps in Darfur.

Adam Regal, the spokesperson for the Coordination, stated in a press release that “food shortages have reached lethal levels, particularly among children, women, and the elderly in Darfur’s displacement camps.” He attributed this to what he described as a dangerous decline in the volume of humanitarian aid, which is failing to meet even the minimum basic needs.

He added that “camps are witnessing deaths due to hunger and malnutrition, alongside a broad spread of diseases associated with the absence of food and clean water.”

Regal pointed out that the population relies entirely on humanitarian aid, which has become scarce, leaving organizations and host communities alone to face a worsening catastrophe without an international response that matches the scale of the tragedy.
