The Emergency Lawyers group in Sudan has called for the intervention of independent and neutral bodies to investigate two boat sinking incidents, which claimed the lives of at least 33 people including women and children to determine responsibility and hold those negligent accountable.
In a press statement today (Tuesday), the group stated that it is following with great sadness and sorrow the sinking of two river boats in “Deim al-Qarai” on February 11, which resulted in the deaths of 21 people, and in “Wad al-Zaki” on the 14th of the same month, which led to the deaths of 12 people. This brings the total number of victims to at least 33, including women and children, in addition to a number of missing persons.
The group added: “The de facto authority bears direct responsibility for these tragedies as a result of negligence and failure to protect civilians and ensure their safety.”
It noted that these two tragedies come amid the ongoing war in Sudan, which has increased the vulnerability of civilians and their exposure to daily risks, making these incidents a direct result of negligence and failure by the responsible authorities.
