Washington designates Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist organization

Washington - Mashaweer

The U.S. Department of State said today (Monday) that President Donald Trump’s administration has placed the “Muslim Brotherhood” in Sudan on the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorist organizations and intends to designate it as a Foreign Terrorist Organization effective March 16.

According to Agence France-Presse, the department said in a statement: “The Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood uses excessive violence against civilians to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan and spread its extremist ideology,” and accused the group of receiving support from Iran.

This designation takes effect within a week, after the United States announced in January the designation of several other branches of the “Brotherhood” as terrorist organizations, including its branch in Egypt, its historical stronghold.
