Exhibition at the United Nations Headquarters on the Lives of Sudanese Refugee Women

New York – Mashawir

The United Nations is organizing an exhibition at its headquarters titled “Faces from Sudan: Women in Times of War,” offering a direct window into the lives of Sudanese refugee women.

Through the lens of the camera, the exhibition presents real-life testimonies from Chad, documenting harsh journeys of escape marked by both pain and resilience.

Since the outbreak of armed conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023, Sudanese women and girls—who form the backbone of society—have continued to pay a heavy price, facing multiple forms of serious violations.

Many women have endured indiscriminate shelling between the warring parties, in addition to witnessing destruction, death, looting of property, and forced displacement, as well as incidents of sexual violence that have come to symbolize one of the darkest aspects of the war.

This painful reality within the Sudanese context has led to deep psychological impacts on many women, with some experiencing depression, anxiety, fear, despair, and insomnia, and in some cases, suicidal thoughts.
