Umma Party Announces Support for Nairobi Charter While Reserving Position on Separation of Religion and State

Nairobi – Mashawir

The National Umma Party has announced its reservation regarding the clause contained in the Sudanese Founding Alliance roadmap document concerning the “separation of religion and state.”

In a press statement issued by its General Secretariat, the party affirmed its overall support for the principles outlined in the charter, describing it as “a serious step toward bringing together national visions.” However, it expressed explicit reservations about the provision related to separating religion from the state.

The party stated that including this “sensitive and controversial issue” in such a “simplified and direct manner” does not serve the national consensus required at this critical stage.

It stressed that issues of identity and the relationship between religion and the state should instead be discussed within a comprehensive national constitutional conference to be held after the end of the war, with the participation of all Sudanese people without exclusion.

The party further reaffirmed its commitment to its core principles while continuing to support efforts aimed at ending the war and restoring the civilian democratic transition.

It also called for managing dialogue on critical national issues with responsibility and wisdom in a way that prioritizes common ground and postpones divisive disagreements.
