A joint report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) has warned of a worsening acute food insecurity situation in Sudan.
The report continues to classify Sudan among the world’s most severe hunger hotspots through November 2026.
It stated that 14 areas in North and South Darfur, as well as South Kordofan, are at risk of famine until September 2026, with the threat likely to persist in 13 of those areas during the harvest season and through January 2027.
The report also noted that 19.5 million people—about 41% of the population—were experiencing Crisis-level food insecurity or worse (IPC Phase 3 and above) as of May 2026, including 5 million people in Emergency conditions (IPC Phase 4), according to the United Nations.
