UN Security Council Concerned About Imminent Risk of Atrocities in El Obeid

New York – Mashawir

The United Nations Security Council expressed deep concern on Saturday over an “imminent risk of large-scale atrocities” in the Sudanese city of El Obeid, amid fears of an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In a statement, Council members urged the RSF to “immediately halt its offensive against El Obeid,” pointing to reports of significant military reinforcements around the city.

El Obeid, located in North Kordofan State, has been under siege for months by the RSF, which has been engaged in a war with the Sudanese Armed Forces since April 2023.

On Friday, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, spoke by phone with RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, urging him not to launch an attack on El Obeid.
