Refugees at Awil Camp, located in the Khazan Jadid administrative unit of East Darfur State, are facing a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation amid a complete absence of relief assistance and growing basic needs. The crisis comes as the rainy season begins, bringing heavy rainfall along with serious health and environmental challenges.
Around 75 families, comprising approximately 700 people, are living under extremely harsh conditions due to a severe shortage of emergency shelter materials. Families lack tents, plastic sheeting, blankets, and ropes—the essential items needed to provide even minimal protection from adverse weather.
This situation has left the most vulnerable groups exposed to increasing climate-related and health risks, raising serious concerns about the potential spread of diseases commonly associated with the rainy season.
Mahmoud Abdel Halim, a volunteer activist, told Mashaweer that the camp is experiencing an acute food shortage following the suspension of humanitarian assistance in recent months.
He explained that the interruption of aid has significantly undermined household food security and contributed to rising rates of malnutrition, particularly among children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers, while soaring prices of basic commodities and weak purchasing power have further worsened living conditions.
Residents of Awil Camp who spoke to Mashaweer issued an urgent appeal to humanitarian organizations, United Nations agencies, and international donors, calling for immediate intervention to save the lives of hundreds of refugees by providing essential food and shelter assistance, safeguarding their dignity, and helping to ease their growing suffering.
