The Sudanese Teachers’ Committee has condemned the summons issued to Rasha Mohamed Mukhtar Al-Khatib, a committee member in Kassala State, by the state’s security authorities in connection with the teachers’ strike demanding improved living conditions and professional rights.
In a statement, the committee said that the summoning and targeting of teachers and committee members in several states reflects the authorities’ reliance on a security-based approach rather than responding to the teachers’ legitimate demands. It argued that such an approach would not resolve the crisis but would instead deepen it.
The committee stressed that attempts to pressure teachers would neither weaken their movement nor deter them from pursuing their rights. Instead, it said, such measures would strengthen their determination to continue their campaign.
It also warned that the continuation of these policies could lead to greater public tension, with negative consequences for the country’s stability and the future of the education system.
The statement added that the security apparatus under the former regime had adopted similar tactics—”in a much harsher manner”—without preventing the regime’s eventual downfall. It cited the case of Ahmed Al-Khair, who died in custody, as an example of the dangers of prioritizing security measures over dialogue and addressing legitimate demands.
The Sudanese Teachers’ Committee reaffirmed its commitment to defending teachers’ rights, emphasizing that dialogue and a genuine response to legitimate demands remain the only effective path to resolving the crisis, rather than security summonses or pressure. The committee also pledged to continue standing firmly with teachers until their demands are met.
