A delegation of Sudanese civil forces, led by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, discussed the repercussions of the war in Sudan and efforts to reach a humanitarian truce and launch an inclusive political process with Norwegian State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Andreas Kravik.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the delegation’s participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The delegation briefed the Norwegian official on the consequences of the war and what it described as an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.”
The delegation called on Oslo to play a role in strengthening humanitarian assistance and supporting efforts to reach a truce without preconditions.
It said that “the truce should coincide with the launch of an inclusive political process that addresses the root causes of the crisis in Sudan, ends the war, leads to lasting peace, and returns the country to the path of transition toward democratic civilian rule.”
For his part, Kravik briefed the delegation on the Norwegian government’s efforts to support peace and stability in Sudan.
He pointed to Norway’s participation in a joint meeting scheduled to take place in New York on Wednesday, September 23, between members of the Quad and the Quintet groups concerned with the Sudan file.
According to the statement, the Norwegian official affirmed that his country would continue its efforts to push the parties toward ending the war and achieving peace and stability.
He stressed that “these efforts should lead to responding to the aspirations of the Sudanese people expressed during the December Revolution, foremost among them freedom, peace, justice, and democratic civilian rule.”
