Former member of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, Mohamed al-Faki Suleiman, said that the message sent by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to the US president came under international and regional pressure.
He noted that influential regional countries had warned al-Burhan about the gravity of the situation in Sudan and the possibility of state fragmentation if he continued pursuing a path of open confrontation.
In remarks to Sky News Arabia, al-Faki said al-Burhan’s message should be seized as an opportunity and further pressure should be exerted on him. He described al-Burhan as “a liar and a consummate operator,” adding that he had derailed several initiatives.
Al-Faki urged regional countries that support al-Burhan and had exerted pressure on him to maintain this approach. He stressed that Sudan’s stability was in the direct interest of these countries, given the risks of the country breaking apart and becoming fertile ground for terrorism and tribal militias.
He warned that such a scenario would pose a threat to the national security of neighbouring countries and states bordering the Red Sea.
