International calls to end external support for the warring parties in Sudan

New York – Mashawir

U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal has introduced a resolution condemning attacks on civilians in Sudan and calling for an end to external support for the warring parties, as well as strengthening efforts to reach a negotiated settlement to the war, which—according to the resolution—has caused more than 400,000 deaths and displaced over 14 million people.

The resolution affirms that the Sudanese civil war cannot be resolved militarily, and that external support to the warring parties prolongs the conflict and increases civilian suffering.

It also notes that the ongoing conflict threatens Sudan’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, warning of the risk of the war spreading to neighboring countries.

The resolution condemns all attacks against civilians in Sudan, including what it describes as a genocidal campaign carried out by the Rapid Support Forces in Darfur. It calls on all parties to adhere to international law in protecting civilians and to halt attacks on schools, medical facilities, and places of worship.

The resolution further urges the administration of Donald Trump to take clear and decisive actions to end external support for the warring parties and to work toward ending the Sudanese civil war and restoring civilian democratic governance in Sudan.

It also calls on the international community to prioritize efforts to end the war, support reconstruction, restore the rule of law, and hold perpetrators of mass killings, sexual violence, and other human rights violations accountable.
