Fish Die-Off in Sudan’s Lake Nubia Raises Environmental and Health Concerns

Wadi Halfa – Mashawir

The shoreline of Lake Nubia in the city of Wadi Halfa, Northern State, turned into a shocking scene on Friday as waves washed large numbers of dead fish onto the banks.

According to local residents, the causes remain unclear so far, amid growing fears of a potential environmental disaster.

Citizens are increasingly concerned about the possibility of toxic substances leaking into the lake’s waters, potentially linked to unregulated mining activities in the area. This has raised widespread alarm about the safety of the ecosystem and fish resources.

Some observers suggest that such incidents may also occur during periods of high temperatures, as rising heat can reduce dissolved oxygen levels in the water, which may lead to fish die-offs.
