Measles and Tuberculosis Ravage Displacement Camps in Darfur

Tawila – Mashawir

The Preparatory Committee of the Sudan Doctors’ Syndicate revealed on Thursday that two children have died from tuberculosis, while more than 100 cases of the disease have been recorded in displacement camps in Tawila, North Darfur State, amid deteriorating healthcare services, lack of vaccinations, and the continued spread of measles.

The committee explained that 67 tuberculosis cases were also recorded in displacement camps in El-Obeid, North Kordofan State, with no deaths reported during the recent period.

It added that the spread of tuberculosis is linked to hunger, malnutrition, overcrowding in shelters and displacement camps, the collapse of healthcare services, as well as water scarcity and contamination.

The committee further noted that children, elderly people, individuals with chronic illnesses, and pregnant women are living under harsh environmental conditions due to shortages of water and food.
