The United Nations Protection Cluster in Sudan said on Sunday that protection systems in Sudan have collapsed, particularly in Khartoum, Darfur, and Kordofan, amid escalating risks facing civilians.
In a report, the group stated that “the protection environment in Sudan continues to be characterized by systematic violence against civilians, severe restrictions on movement, and the collapse of protection systems, especially in Darfur, Kordofan, Khartoum, and areas under siege or located along frontlines.”
The report explained that attacks on civilians remain the most serious protection concern nationwide, as deaths and injuries continue due to aerial bombardments, drone strikes, artillery shelling, and ground attacks targeting residential neighborhoods, markets, hospitals, schools, displacement sites, and civilian infrastructure.
It further noted that “the expanded use of drones has significantly changed the nature of the protection environment,” while attacks on civilian objects have deprived people of essential services, including healthcare, education, water, markets, and humanitarian aid, in addition to increasing displacement, family separation, and food insecurity.
