Diverse Sudanese political and civil forces have achieved a significant political breakthrough after reaching a common vision for launching a political process aimed at ending the war and establishing the foundations for a peaceful transition toward democratic civilian rule, following several days of deliberations.
In a joint statement, the participating groups—which were once united under a single umbrella before the war led to divisions and differing positions—announced their agreement on a shared political framework. The signatories included the Civil Democratic Alliance of the Forces of the Revolution (Sumoud), led by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, the Democratic Bloc allied with the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party, as well as other political parties, civic groups, and women’s and youth organizations.
The statement affirmed the parties’ commitment to a new political pathway aimed at achieving comprehensive peace, ending the conflict, and establishing the foundations of a peaceful settlement that preserves Sudan’s unity and sovereignty.
The agreement is considered the first of its kind since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023, bringing together anti-war forces represented by the Sumoud Alliance and the Democratic Bloc, which is regarded as the largest political coalition supporting the Sudanese Armed Forces.
In the early hours of Friday, the Sudanese parties submitted the draft vision—agreed upon unanimously—to the international Quint Mechanism, which includes the African Union, the League of Arab States, the European Union, the United Nations, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.
