Cholera Outbreak Worsens the Suffering of Displaced People in West Kordofan

Wad Banda – Mashawir

Displaced residents from Wad Banda locality in West Kordofan State told Mashawir that the cholera outbreak is spreading at an alarming rate across the area.

Hamad Al-Sayir, who lives at the Tayba Al-Jadida displacement shelter, told Mashawir that environmental health conditions have deteriorated dramatically due to the spread of stagnant water pools and accumulated standing water, particularly following heavy rainfall in the region.

He added that the few health facilities still operating in the locality are suffering from shortages of medicines, intravenous fluids, and essential medical supplies.

Al-Sayir noted that the high density of mosquitoes at night and flies during the day is worsening the health situation of displaced people who arrived from the city of An-Nuhud and contributing to the increasing spread of cholera.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Bashir, who resides in a displacement center in the area of Al-Tabun, explained that contaminated water and its mixing with sewage have led to the spread of cholera in villages and communities across the locality.

He told Mashawir that dozens of cases of acute watery diarrhea have emerged among displaced populations amid extremely challenging conditions.

Bashir also reported deaths, particularly among children and pregnant women.

In a related development, Yousif Mahmoud, a member of the Dar Hamar Emergency Response Room, told Mashawir that confirmed cases have so far reached 19, with four reported deaths.

Mahmoud warned that there are worrying signs that the outbreak is following an upward trajectory, placing the entire region at risk of a major health disaster. He stressed the need for urgent intervention before the epidemic spirals out of control, especially as hospitals and health centers are completely unable to cope with the growing number of patients.
