The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative in Sudan, Mary-Hélène Verney, has said that Sudan continues to represent the world’s largest displacement crisis, while the agency faces a funding gap of 72 percent for its operations.
She noted that at least 4.5 million Sudanese are currently living as refugees in other countries.
Verney added that several areas of Sudan continue to experience active conflict and new waves of displacement, particularly in Kordofan, Blue Nile State, and Darfur.
She explained that there are vast numbers of displaced people in the Darfur town of Tawila alone, estimated at around 700,000 individuals.
Verney acknowledged that the significant funding shortfall—currently standing at 72 percent—has made it increasingly difficult for UNHCR to respond rapidly to emergencies and newly emerging displacement crises.
She stressed that the UN refugee agency continues to regard Sudan as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis at present, adding that the most urgent needs are life-saving assistance, particularly in areas experiencing new displacement in Darfur and Kordofan.
