900 Displaced Pupils Study in the Open Air at Darfur Camps

Central Darfur – Mashaweer

More than 900 pupils, most of them children of families displaced from the city of El Fasher and its displacement camps, are facing extremely difficult learning conditions at a temporary school in Golo locality, Central Darfur State. The school lacks even the most basic educational facilities as the rainy season approaches.

The pupils continue to attend classes in the open air and under a simple makeshift shelter (rakouba), which provides little protection from rain or harsh weather. The school also suffers from a severe shortage of desks, plastic tarpaulins, and other essential materials needed to sustain the learning process.

Displaced resident Adam Issa told Mashaweer that continuing education under such conditions threatens the future of hundreds of children.

He said the pupils lack a safe and dignified learning environment that would enable them to continue their education, particularly with the onset of the rainy season.

Meanwhile, volunteer activist Suleiman Abdallah told Mashaweer that the majority of the pupils are displaced children who fled El Fasher and its camps. He explained that the school is accommodating far more students than it was designed for, despite the absence of basic resources, making an urgent humanitarian response essential to ensure that classes continue and that children are not deprived of their right to education.

He added that local groups have issued an urgent humanitarian appeal to local, regional, and international organizations to intervene by providing school desks, plastic tarpaulins, and essential educational supplies to ensure the continuity of education and protect pupils from the impact of the rainy season.
