The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate has expressed deep concern over the serious deterioration in the health of three female journalists detained by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Nyala, South Darfur State. The syndicate said it had received information indicating that the detainees have been denied access to medical treatment outside their place of detention despite their worsening health conditions.
The syndicate identified the detained journalists as Ishraqa Abdelrahman, Zahraa Mohamed Al-Hassan, and Mawahib Ibrahim, along with a number of women civil society activists. According to the statement, they were arrested on February 28 after participating in a workshop on women’s rights and have remained in detention without formal charges or being brought to trial.
The syndicate called for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained journalists and activists, the provision of urgent medical care, disclosure of their places of detention, and access for their families and legal representatives. It held the Rapid Support Forces legally and morally responsible for their safety and well-being.
The syndicate also urged organizations concerned with press freedom and human rights to intervene urgently and exert pressure for the detainees’ release and to ensure they receive adequate medical care. It stressed that targeting journalists restricts the flow of information from conflict areas and undermines press freedom.
