The Quint Mechanism on Sudan has resumed consultations in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, with a number of political and civilian groups, while several key factions have boycotted the meetings. The consultations are part of efforts to revive the political process and end the war that has continued for more than three years. Meanwhile, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has reopened its mission in Khartoum, signaling its renewed direct engagement in the Sudanese crisis.
The Nairobi Declaration and Somoud coalitions declined to participate in the Addis Ababa consultations, arguing that the Quint Mechanism’s approach to the political process overlooks fundamental issues related to ending the war.
The Quint Mechanism—comprising the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), the League of Arab States, and IGAD—opened its meetings with separate sessions involving delegations that accepted its invitation. The consultations are part of a broader series of engagements aimed at assessing the positions of Sudan’s political blocs and restarting a political process that could pave the way for ending the conflict.
Mubarak Ardol, a senior figure in the Democratic Bloc, said that “our delegation presented its vision for the dialogue and stressed that the current measures should be limited to preparations for the actual political dialogue, which should take place inside Sudan after the necessary conditions and conducive environment have been established.”
