The humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has reported that 1,225 pregnant and breastfeeding women in refugee camps in eastern Chad—most of them Sudanese—are suffering from moderate to severe acute malnutrition.
According to MSF, 5,785 women in total are experiencing deteriorating nutritional conditions, including the 1,225 cases classified as moderate or severe malnutrition.
The organization noted that funding shortages have significantly undermined access to food assistance and humanitarian aid for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
MSF called on international donors to provide urgent funding for this year’s humanitarian response plans and to ensure that refugees and host communities have access to food, clean water, healthcare, and nutritional support.
Nearly half a million people have fled from Sudan to eastern Chad, the majority from the Darfur region bordering Chad. In recent months, armed clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have spread to areas near the Chadian border, further worsening the humanitarian and security conditions for those fleeing the conflict.
