UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has revealed that 67 attacks on schools in Sudan have been documented, while 154 cases of military use of educational facilities have been reported.
Mohammed made the remarks during a meeting held by members of the United Nations Security Council under the so-called “Arria-formula”, which takes place outside the Council’s formal meeting framework.
She said that “the war has stolen the future of Sudan’s children by depriving them of education.”
Numerous schools in Khartoum, Al Jazirah and the wider Kordofan region have been destroyed or used as military barracks, while some schools have also been turned into shelters for internally displaced people.
Amina Mohammed said that 8 million school-age children remain out of school, stressing that the impact has been disproportionate on millions of displaced children, particularly those seeking safety outside Sudan.
She emphasized that the time has come to end the war and pull Sudan back from the brink of losing another generation of its children.
