Artistic Activities Promote a Culture of Tolerance in Sudanese Refugee Settlements

Kryandongo – Mashaweer

On Sunday, the “Waei” Youth Community at the Kryandongo Refugee Camp for Sudanese refugees in Uganda organized a community activity titled “A Message of Peace,” attended by around 100 young people, children, women, and other community members. The initiative aimed to promote a culture of peace, tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and social cohesion within the camp.

The activity included the creation of a peace mural, writing messages calling for peace, and signing a peace charter, in addition to cultural, heritage, and entertainment performances featuring artist Awad Mashawi. It also included activities and competitions for children, as well as dialogue sessions and community participation.

Mohamed Ali Al-Sheikh, a member of the Waei Organization, told Mashaweer that “the activity aims to provide a space that brings together different segments of the community around the values of peace, tolerance, and respect for diversity.”

He highlighted “the importance of involving youth, children, and women in community initiatives that strengthen social cohesion and help counter hate speech and violence.”

He added that “the message of peace should not be limited to events, but requires transforming the values of dialogue, acceptance of others, and joint action into daily practices within the community, contributing to the creation of a safer environment and greater coexistence.”

Meanwhile, volunteer activist at the Kryandongo Camp, Mukhtar Al-Nayer, told Mashaweer that “the participation of such a large number of community members reflected the need for spaces that allow people to express their views and exchange ideas away from divisions.”

He explained that “the cultural and recreational activities, along with programs targeting children, helped create a positive atmosphere and foster a spirit of cooperation.”

He stressed the importance of continuing initiatives that promote messages of love and tolerance and support peaceful coexistence within the camp.
