The General Coordination of Displacement and Refugee Camps in the Darfur region has reported a rise in cases of malnutrition among children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers in the Al-Malha area of North Darfur State.
The coordination warned of a deterioration in the humanitarian situation in the area amid a lack of assistance, food shortages and limited access to healthcare.
In a statement, the coordination’s official spokesperson, Adam Regal, said around 6,200 children are suffering from malnutrition, including approximately 1,500 children experiencing severe acute malnutrition. He added that around 1,350 pregnant and breastfeeding women are also suffering from malnutrition.
Regal noted that the area is experiencing outbreaks of several diseases, including tuberculosis, anemia and diarrhea, while facing a severe shortage of medicines, which are only available in limited quantities at some private pharmacies.
He added that Al-Malha is completely cut off from humanitarian assistance due to the closure of the main road and the absence of humanitarian organizations from the area.
Regal said displaced people are scattered across several locations that lack adequate food, water, medicine and safe shelter.
