Ensuring Food Safety in Sudanese Refugee Camps

Kyangwali – Mashaweer

Volunteers at Kyangwali Camp, which hosts Sudanese refugees in Uganda, conducted training on the safe handling of food, covering storage, preparation, and meal-handling practices, with the aim of ensuring food safety before meals reach beneficiary families.

Around 45 volunteers take part daily in preparing meals relied upon by hundreds of families in the camp. The training aims to strengthen food safety standards and reduce health risks associated with improper storage or preparation.

Faisal Osman, a member of the Sudanese Doctors’ Association in the United States, told Mashaweer that “the camp kitchens receive more than six tons of food supplies each month, which volunteers turn into meals distributed to hundreds of families.”

He added that “the volunteers’ efforts help transform food supplies into safe meals that reach families who depend on them on a daily basis.”

Meanwhile, Mukhtar Al-Nayer, a volunteer activist at Kyangwali Camp, told Mashaweer that “the training is an important step toward ensuring the safety of the food provided to families.”

He noted that volunteers bear significant responsibility for preparing and regularly distributing meals.

He stressed the importance of continuing the training and building the capacity of kitchen workers, in addition to providing the tools and supplies needed to apply proper hygiene, storage, and safe food preparation standards.
